None of the other illustrations stand out, though, and I'm not even completely sure what the moral of the story's supposed to be. There's one cute illustration, where Leo tries to look "tough" in the mirror. The art isn't as exceptional as James's best work, and the story is fairly thin and feels even more quickly wrapped up than usual. It's not bad and not great - it's just somewhere in the "average, largely forgettable" category. This book was never one of my favorites as a child. Fortunately, I guess Past Me had thought ahead a little, since they were still sitting in the trunk of my car, instead of joining the library donation pile from the summer. I'd thinned out my Serendipity books already, then slightly regretted getting rid of them before I added actual reviews to remind myself why I'd chosen to let go of certain ones. 5/20/2023 0 Comments The lost mariner oliver sacksAll living things expire, life is a temporary consciousness, to begin with, whether we have memory fundamentally does not matter due to this. People are motivated by different ideas because our different values cause different actions to make us happy. “Meaningful” to one person could be raising a family while another person may believe it is more meaningful to be successful in their career and amass wealth. “Meaningful” should have a more personal sense, as we intrinsically value things differently. In other words, life’s purpose is to be happy happiness makes for a meaningful life, not memory. Isolated actions are meaningful on their own, memory does not dictate their meaningfulness, happiness does. Happiness does not require memory as it is a momentary feeling. Purpose is goals in life or the actions that make them happy. A general definition of “meaningful” is living a life with purpose, which influences the behaviors of a person and guides their decisions. To live a meaningful life, memory is not required. Berg’s novel is as comforting as Lucille’s fresh-baked cookies, with plenty of charm and memorable characters. Together with Lucille, who has recently faced her own tragic loss, the three form something like a family. The two form a bond, and when Maddy gets pregnant with her ex-boyfriend’s baby, she seeks Arthur’s help. Then he meets Maddy, a troubled teen who is bullied at school and misunderstood by her father at home, and who has taken to hanging out at the cemetery to be by herself. The only other constants in his life are taking care of his cat and keeping his distance from his nosy neighbor, Lucille. Since his wife’s death, the best part of his daily routine is visiting the cemetery to eat lunch at her grave. Arthur, the title character of the latest from Berg ( Talk Before Sleep), does not enjoy living alone. 5/20/2023 0 Comments Rainbirds clarissa goenawanRen heads to Akakawa to conclude his sister's affairs, still failing to understand why she chose to abandon the family and Tokyo for this desolate town years ago.īut Ren soon finds himself picking up where Keiko left off, accepting both her teaching position at a local cram school and the bizarre arrangement of free lodging at a wealthy politician’s mansion in exchange for reading to the man’s catatonic wife.Īs he comes to know the figures in Akakawa, from the enigmatic politician to his fellow teachers and a rebellious, alluring student named Rio, Ren delves into his shared childhood with Keiko and what followed, trying to piece together what happened the night of her death.
