5/22/2023 0 Comments Norwegian wood book![]() Haruki Murakami was an author I’d been meaning to read for years, but love triangles, coming of age stories and student dramas aren’t my usual thing. I must admit, I was a teeny-weeny bit sceptical about this book before reading it. Murakami’s coming-of-age novel is just as playful and light-hearted as it is poignant and melancholic, taking us on a journey through life and death, joy and sorrow, and the paradox that is existence itself. Amidst unstable friendships and meaningless one-night-stands, Toru meets Midori, an outgoing, unpredictable and eccentric student whose vibrancy and confidence draws him in, leaving him unsure whether to go back or move forward. Damaged, vulnerable and a little too fragile for the world around her, Naoko is admitted to a sanatorium, leaving Toru with nothing but the odd letter from her and the recurring memories of their time together. ![]() ![]() In an instant, he is transported back to the vivid memories of his days as a student in Tokyo and his first love, Naoko. 37-year-old Toru Watanabe is on a plane to Germany when he hears The Beatles’ song Norwegian Wood echoing through the speakers. ![]()
